Nvidia's latest financial results are in, and the AI hardware giant continues to shatter expectations. As the dominant provider of graphics processing units (GPUs) and accelerated computing infrastructure, Nvidia has been at the epicenter of the generative AI boom. But their recent quarter reveals an evolution: they aren't just selling chips; they are essentially building the financial and physical architecture of the future AI economy.
Let's unpack the numbers from their latest 10-Q filing for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (ended April 26, 2026) to see exactly how this growth is unfolding.
Nvidia reported a staggering $81.6 billion in total revenue for the quarter, an 85% year-over-year increase and a 20% jump from just the previous quarter. Even more impressively, they maintained a gross margin of 74.9%, up dramatically from 60.5% a year ago.
To better reflect its evolving business, Nvidia introduced a new reporting framework this quarter, splitting its operations into two market platforms: Data Center and Edge Computing.
Unsurprisingly, the Data Center segment is the heavy lifter, pulling in $75.2 billion (92% of total revenue). Nvidia further broke this down into two categories:
This nearly even split between Hyperscale and ACIE shows that AI adoption is broadening significantly beyond the mega-cap tech giants into diverse enterprise, sovereign, and industrial AI applications. A key driver of this surge? Nvidia's new Blackwell architecture, which the filing notes now accounts for the majority of their system shipments, proving that customers are aggressively upgrading to the latest generation of compute.
The most eye-popping figure on the income statement might not be revenue, but net income, which printed at $58.3 billion. If you do the math, that represents a net profit margin of 71.5%.
How is net income higher than operating income ($53.5 billion)? The answer lies in Nvidia's investment portfolio. The filing reveals a massive $15.9 billion net gain from equity securities.
Nvidia invests heavily in the broader AI ecosystem, holding significant strategic stakes in public and private companies, including AI model developers like xAI, photonics and optical infrastructure providers like Coherent, and semiconductor peers like Arm Holdings. As the AI tide has lifted all boats, the value of Nvidia's strategic stakes has skyrocketed. While this one-time, mark-to-market gain heavily inflates bottom-line net income, it highlights how Nvidia profits from the AI ecosystem in more ways than one.
With $50.3 billion generated in operating cash flow in just three months, Nvidia's coffers are overflowing. Management is returning this wealth to shareholders aggressively, repurchasing $20.2 billion of stock in Q1 and authorizing a massive new $80 billion share repurchase program.
However, it's not a landscape entirely without friction. The filing explicitly notes ongoing challenges with complex global trade regulations. Evolving U.S. government export controls continue to restrict sales of advanced AI chips to certain countries (like China and parts of the Middle East), meaning geopolitical tensions remain a persistent headwind.
Nvidia is firing on all cylinders. The transition to the Blackwell architecture is driving massive top-line growth, while its ecosystem investments are delivering multi-billion-dollar windfalls. As the company pushes further into agentic AI and physical robotics under its Edge Computing umbrella ($6.4 billion in revenue), the main challenge won't be finding demand, but navigating geopolitical constraints while continuing to satisfy the world's insatiable appetite for compute.
