Let's unpack the numbers from MGM Resorts International's latest 10-Q filing to see how things are going and what we can learn from their income statement. As one of the world's largest hospitality and entertainment companies, MGM operates iconic Las Vegas Strip properties like the Bellagio and MGM Grand, regional casinos across the United States, international resorts in Macau, and an expanding online gaming footprint through MGM Digital. By diving into the financial data from the second quarter of 2026, we can get a clearer picture of where the company is generating its cash and where it faces headwinds.
Looking at the flow of revenue above, you might notice a small "Unallocated Revenue" bucket of $59.7 million. This isn't tied to a specific resort or digital property; rather, it primarily represents corporate operations and management services revenue that MGM provides to other entities.
MGM brought in a total of $4.45 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026. The Las Vegas Strip remains the company's undisputed heavyweight champion, generating $2.17 billion—nearly half of the total revenue pie. This was fueled by a strong 93% hotel occupancy rate and an average daily room rate (ADR) of $242.
MGM China, which includes the MGM Macau and MGM Cotai resorts, is the second-largest contributor, posting $1.1 billion in revenue (25% of the total). Macau's mass-market table games continue to be a massive draw, generating over $1 billion in table games win this quarter alone with a solid 27.2% win percentage.
Regional Operations, encompassing domestic casinos outside of Nevada, contributed $924 million. Meanwhile, the MGM Digital segment—which includes the interactive gaming platform LeoVegas—brought in $196.3 million.
While revenue gives us the top-line story, the expense side of the income statement reveals some interesting operational shifts. MGM reported an operating income of $503.6 million for the quarter, yielding an operating margin of 11.3%. Net income landed at $322.8 million.
However, looking under the hood of their $3.95 billion in total operating expenses exposes a couple of major non-routine items that significantly impacted the bottom line. On the positive side, MGM recorded a massive $286.7 million net gain from property transactions. On the flip side, the company took a $111 million goodwill impairment charge specifically related to a reporting unit within the MGM Digital segment. Goodwill impairments typically occur when a company reassesses the value of a past acquisition and determines it is no longer worth the premium originally paid. This suggests that despite the sector's hype, some of MGM's interactive gaming assets might not be meeting initial growth expectations.
It's also worth highlighting MGM's unconsolidated affiliates, primarily the BetMGM North America Venture. Because it is structured as a joint venture, BetMGM's full revenues aren't consolidated directly into MGM's top line. Instead, MGM records its proportionate share of the venture's operating income. For Q2 2026, MGM recorded $23.1 million in operating income from BetMGM, showing that the sports betting and iGaming venture is operating profitably and contributing positive cash flow to the bottom line.
Despite heavy capital expenditures, MGM remains highly focused on returning capital to shareholders, repurchasing roughly 4.3 million shares for $163.5 million during the quarter.
As the company navigates the rest of 2026, it faces a complex landscape. The Las Vegas market remains robust, but inflation and shifting consumer spending habits could pressure margins. Meanwhile, MGM's exposure to Macau offers lucrative upside but keeps the company sensitive to the region's geopolitical and regulatory shifts. Ultimately, balancing the capital-intensive physical resorts with the highly competitive, yet margin-pressured digital gaming landscape will be the tightrope MGM's management must walk in the quarters to come.
