When you walk into a modern office building, hospital, or airport, the lighting above you and the climate controls on the wall are increasingly part of an interconnected digital ecosystem. At the center of this industrial technology space is Acuity Inc. (NYSE: AYI)—formerly known as Acuity Brands—a leading provider of commercial lighting solutions and intelligent building management systems. Today, our goal is to dig into the income statement from the company’s latest 10-K filing for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2026, to see how the business is performing and what we can learn from its shifting revenue mix.
For fiscal 2026, Acuity generated $4.64 billion in total net sales, a solid 6.8% increase over the $4.35 billion recorded in fiscal 2025. Even more impressive is what happened further down the income statement: while revenue grew nearly 7%, the cost of products sold ticked up by just 1.1% to $2.29 billion.
This dynamic pushed Acuity’s gross profit (revenue minus the direct costs of manufacturing products) up 13.1% to $2.35 billion, expanding its gross margin by 280 basis points (2.8 percentage points) to 50.6%.
After accounting for $1.61 billion in selling, distribution, and administrative expenses and $23.7 million in special charges (primarily severance and asset impairments), operating profit jumped 26.6% to $713.7 million, representing a healthy 15.4% operating margin. On the bottom line, net income rose 34.0% to $531.3 million, or $17.05 per diluted share (up from $12.53 in fiscal 2025), aided in part by the absence of a $30.9 million pension settlement loss that weighed on the prior year's miscellaneous expenses.
The following flow diagram illustrates how Acuity’s fiscal 2026 revenues flowed through its cost structure to reach net income:
A closer look at Acuity’s two operating segments reveals the engine behind this margin expansion:
Acuity’s strong earnings translated directly into cash generation. Operating cash flow jumped 37.3% to $825.6 million, helped by a $74.7 million reduction in inventory levels. Management deployed this cash aggressively to strengthen the balance sheet and reward shareholders:
Acuity’s fiscal 2026 results highlight a successful strategic pivot. While its core lighting business faces mature market conditions and intense competition from global heavyweights like Signify (Philips) and Hubbell—alongside ongoing supply chain sensitivities, tariff complexities, and interest-rate pressures on commercial construction—the rapid scaling of Acuity Intelligent Spaces is fundamentally reshaping the company's profitability profile. With AIS now generating nearly a quarter of total revenue at a 61%+ gross margin and acquisition debt rapidly being retired, Acuity enters fiscal 2027 on a remarkably solid financial footing.
