Let's unpack the numbers from their latest 10-Q filing to see how the undisputed king of internet real estate is performing.
If you aren't familiar with VeriSign, the company operates as the ultimate digital toll booth. They are the exclusive registry for .com and .net top-level domains. Every time someone registers or renews a .com address anywhere in the world—whether through customer-facing registrars like GoDaddy or Namecheap—VeriSign collects a wholesale fee.
The first thing that jumps off the page in VeriSign’s Q1 2026 results is the sheer profitability of their business model. For the three months ended March 31, 2026, VeriSign reported $428.9 million in revenue, a solid 7% increase compared to the $402.3 million generated in the same period last year. The bulk of this revenue continues to be generated in the U.S. ($283.4 million), with steady international contributions from EMEA ($73.5 million) and APAC ($48.0 million).
What’s truly remarkable is what happens to that revenue as it flows down the income statement. While the top line grew by 7%, the cost of revenues actually shrank by 1%, coming in flat at $49.2 million. When a company's revenue scales but its direct costs don't budge, margins expand aggressively.
As a result, VeriSign posted an operating income of $293.6 million, up 8% year-over-year. That translates to an eye-watering operating margin of 68.5%. Bottom-line net income was equally impressive, landing at $214.5 million, up from $199.3 million in Q1 2025.
The most anticipated development for VeriSign investors has been whether the company would soon exercise its pricing power. Under its Cooperative Agreement with the US government (NTIA) and ICANN, VeriSign is permitted to raise the wholesale price of .com domains by up to 7% annually during the last four years of its six-year contract cycle.
In this filing, VeriSign officially confirmed the move: effective November 1, 2026, the annual registry-level wholesale fee for a .com domain will increase from $10.26 to $10.97.
This price hike will be applied across a massive and growing user base. The company ended Q1 2026 with 176.1 million .com and .net domain name registrations, a 4% increase from the 169.8 million reported a year ago. During the first quarter alone, they processed 11.5 million new registrations. When you multiply a $0.71 price increase across a base of roughly 176 million domains, the future revenue implications for late 2026 and beyond are substantial.
What does a business do when it generates $272.4 million in operating cash flow in a single quarter but only requires $7.2 million for capital expenditures? It gives the cash directly back to shareholders.
During the first quarter, VeriSign repurchased 1.0 million shares of its common stock for $225.4 million at an average price of $234.55 per share. On top of that, they paid out $74.2 million in cash dividends. VeriSign is effectively funneling its immense free cash flow straight into shareholder returns, a strategy that heavily supports their stock valuation.
While VeriSign's hold on the .com registry remains absolute, the broader internet infrastructure and domain market is evolving. The company faces indirect competition from providers of alternative generic top-level domains (gTLDs) like Identity Digital, as well as broader network service and DNS competitors like Cloudflare and Akamai.
However, .com remains the undisputed gold standard of digital real estate. With a growing domain base, a highly controlled cost structure, and a confirmed price hike locked in for November, VeriSign continues to prove exactly why it is one of the most uniquely resilient and profitable monopolies in the technology sector.
