Steel Dynamics, Inc. (STLD) is one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, utilizing electric arc furnace (EAF) technology to turn scrap metal into high-quality new steel. Today, we want to dig into the income statement from the company's latest 10-Q filing to see how their core segments are performing, monitor the impact of raw material costs, and understand what the data tells us about their ambitious strategic expansion into the aluminum market.
You might notice a sizable negative revenue and cost item for "Eliminations" in the flow diagram. In a vertically integrated company like Steel Dynamics, divisions frequently sell to one another—for instance, the Metals Recycling division sells scrap directly to the Steel Operations division. To avoid double-counting those internal sales on the consolidated income statement, they are zeroed out via these intersegment eliminations.
Steel Dynamics delivered a powerhouse performance in the second quarter of 2026. Total revenue jumped 33% year-over-year to $6.1 billion. This robust top-line growth cascaded smoothly down the income statement, pushing gross profit to $959.0 million (a 15.7% margin) and propelling net income to $530.8 million. That net income figure represents a massive 76% increase compared to the $301.2 million reported in Q2 2025. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) followed suit, climbing from $2.01 to $3.69.
For the past few years, one of the most closely watched developments at STLD has been the construction of its massive 650,000-metric-ton recycled aluminum flat rolled products mill in Columbus, Mississippi. The second quarter of 2026 provided a major glimpse into its potential.
The mill shipped 53,000 metric tons of finished product during the quarter—a 135% sequential jump from Q1 2026. This drove the Aluminum Operations segment's revenue up a staggering 455% year-over-year to $518.9 million. Because the facility is still in its commissioning phase, the segment posted an operating loss of $49.9 million. This loss was exacerbated by a $16 million non-cash impairment charge related to the relocation of a planned satellite slab center. However, as production volumes continue to scale into the second half of 2026, this segment is positioned to become a meaningful profit driver.
The core Steel Operations—which account for 68% of the company's gross revenue—were the undeniable engine of profitability. The segment generated $4.1 billion in revenue (a 22% increase) and saw its operating income surge by 89% to $719.8 million.
However, the dynamics were slightly different downstream in the Steel Fabrication segment, which produces joists and steel decks for the non-residential construction industry. While fabrication revenues grew 16% to $393.9 million, operating income actually fell 9% to $84.6 million.
This drop highlights a critical industry metric: metal spread. The metal spread is simply the difference between the selling price of the final fabricated product and the cost of the raw materials (purchased steel) used to make it. Because the average cost of steel consumed by the fabrication division rose 8% year-over-year, the division's metal spread contracted by 11%. Despite having a healthy order backlog stretching into early 2027, rising input costs successfully squeezed their margins.
Steel Dynamics is firing on almost all cylinders. The core steel manufacturing business is highly profitable, the recycling operations are benefiting from higher pricing and improved scrap flows, and the highly anticipated aluminum mill is finally generating substantial revenue. While the company will need to navigate input cost pressures in its fabrication unit, its overall financial health is exceptional. Management clearly agrees, having confidently repurchased over $200 million of the company's stock during the quarter.
