Steel Dynamics, Inc. (STLD) is one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States. Operating alongside industry heavyweights like Nucor and U.S. Steel, STLD utilizes an integrated business model that spans from scrap metal recycling to finished steel fabrication. To understand how the company kicked off the year and what is driving its growth, let's unpack the numbers from their latest 10-Q filing to see how things are going and what we can learn from their income statement.
The core engine of STLD remains its Steel Operations, and the first quarter of 2026 was a blockbuster period. Net sales for the consolidated company jumped 19% year-over-year to $5.2 billion. The gross profit surged an impressive 57% to $763.2 million, propelling net income up to $400.1 million—nearly double the $217.7 million reported in the same period last year.
This momentum was largely driven by the Steel Operations segment, which posted an operating income of $555.5 million, a remarkable 143% increase over Q1 2025. The company shipped a record 3.6 million tons of steel during the quarter. Favorable pricing dynamics and expanded metal margins—the difference between average selling prices and the cost of raw materials—allowed STLD to capture significantly more value per ton.
While steel is surging, STLD’s newer Aluminum Operations segment presents a different picture. The segment reported a $64.6 million operating loss in Q1 2026, widening from a $28.7 million loss in Q1 2025.
However, this is expected. STLD is in the heavy commissioning and start-up phase of a massive new recycled aluminum flat-rolled products mill in Columbus, Mississippi. During the quarter, the mill successfully shipped 22,500 metric tons of finished product, representing a 54% sequential increase from late 2025. The company has already started securing product qualifications for lucrative beverage can and automotive contracts. The current losses reflect normal start-up hurdles and temporary pauses, but management is laying the groundwork to capture a growing domestic market for sustainable aluminum.
The rest of the business saw mixed, but ultimately constructive, results:
Steel Dynamics is navigating an incredibly favorable macro environment in 2026. The push for domestic manufacturing onshoring, combined with ongoing U.S. infrastructure spending, provides a powerful tailwind for both steel and aluminum demand. While the Steel Fabrication segment is dealing with higher input costs, the company's vertically integrated structure ensures that one division's higher costs are often another division's profits. As the Columbus aluminum mill moves past its growing pains, STLD appears well-positioned to capitalize on America's continuing industrial resurgence.
