Pest control is often celebrated as one of the most resilient, recession-resistant industries in the market, and Rollins, Inc. (NYSE: ROL)—the parent company behind household names like Orkin, Critter Control, and Western Pest Services—is a premier bellwether for the sector. Today, we are going to dig into the income statement from the company's third-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q to see how the business is performing, examine its revenue drivers, and uncover what is pressuring its bottom-line margins.
For the three months ended September 30, 2026, Rollins generated $1.09 billion in total revenue, representing a solid 6.2% increase compared to the $1.03 billion recorded in the third quarter of 2025. Of that growth, 4.4% was organic (meaning growth from existing operations, excluding the boost from newly acquired businesses), while recent acquisitions—such as Romex Pest Control and Saela Pest Control—contributed the remaining 1.8%.
Rollins breaks its service revenues down into three primary categories alongside minor franchise and ancillary streams:
The diagram below maps out how these third-quarter revenue streams flowed through Rollins' cost structure down to net profit:
While the top line expanded comfortably, the income statement reveals a rare dip in quarterly profitability for Rollins. Gross profit (excluding depreciation and amortization) rose 4.3% to $582.9 million, but gross margin slipped 90 basis points (0.9 percentage points) from 54.4% a year ago to 53.5%. Further down the statement, operating income edged down 1.0% to $222.9 million (a 20.5% operating margin, down from 21.9%), and GAAP net income fell 3.4% to $157.9 million, or $0.33 per diluted share.
What caused expenses to outpace revenue growth? A closer look at the disaggregated expense tables in Note 13 points to two main culprits: insurance and claims and fleet expenses.
Across both cost of services provided and sales, general, and administrative (SG&A) categories, total insurance and claims expense more than doubled year-over-year, surging from $18.1 million in Q3 2025 to $36.8 million in Q3 2026. At the same time, total fleet expenses (costs tied to operating and maintaining thousands of service vehicles) rose 18% from $48.5 million to $57.2 million. Combined with a 34% rise in net interest expense (to $10.7 million) from higher commercial paper borrowings, these cost headwinds more than offset the operating leverage gained on employee wages and materials.
Despite the near-term margin squeeze on the income statement, Rollins' cash generation remains exceptional. Operating cash flow for the third quarter jumped 26.4% year-over-year to $241.9 million, driving free cash flow (operating cash flow minus capital expenditures) up 28.8% to $235.5 million. That translates to a remarkable free cash flow conversion rate of 149.1% of net income. Rollins put this cash to work immediately, spending $121.0 million during the quarter to repurchase and retire 3.1 million shares of its common stock alongside $87.2 million in dividend payouts.
In the broader pest control market—where Rollins competes fiercely with global giant Rentokil Initial (Terminix) and Ecolab's commercial pest division—scale and route density are everything. While Rollins is currently navigating industry-wide inflation in fleet maintenance, auto liability insurance claims, and a tougher environment for winning new residential accounts, its robust commercial momentum and steady roll-up acquisition strategy keep its long-term growth engine intact. Watching how quickly management can tame insurance and fleet overhead will be the key storyline heading into the final quarter of 2026.
