Digging into the income statement in Abbott Laboratories' latest Form 10-Q filing allows us to evaluate how the healthcare giant performed in the second quarter of 2026 and see what we can learn about its underlying operational health. Total net sales reached $12.59 billion, representing a 13.0% increase compared to the second quarter of 2025. However, net earnings dropped to $928 million ($0.53 per diluted share) from $1.78 billion ($1.01 per diluted share) in the prior-year period. This margin compression was primarily driven by higher operating expenses, increased intangible asset amortization, and substantial debt-servicing costs following Abbott's acquisition of Exact Sciences Corporation in March 2026.
To visualize how Abbott's quarterly revenues translate into gross profit, operating expenditures, and net earnings, the diagram below breaks down the consolidated results for the three months ended June 30, 2026.
The major driver behind Abbott's top-line expansion was the acquisition of Exact Sciences, which created a new Cancer Diagnostics product line within the Diagnostic Products division. Total Diagnostic Products revenue rose 42.3% year-over-year to $3.09 billion, propelled by $919 million in Cancer Diagnostics sales. Within the rest of the diagnostics division, Core Laboratory testing generated $1.42 billion, while Rapid and Molecular diagnostics contributed $755 million.
Medical Devices remained Abbott's largest reportable segment, delivering $5.85 billion in net sales, an increase of 9.0% over Q2 2025. Diabetes Care recorded $2.19 billion in revenue, alongside major contributions from Electrophysiology ($861 million), Vascular ($803 million), and Rhythm Management ($743 million). Product developments during the quarter included securing CE Mark approval in May 2026 for Libre®Duo, Abbott's dual glucose-ketone biowearable sensor.
Across Abbott's remaining reportable segments:
While revenue performed strongly, quarterly profit margins were tempered by notable expense increases across the income statement:
Operating earnings for the quarter came in at $1.69 billion (a 13.4% operating margin). After accounting for net interest expense, net non-operating income of $130 million, and income taxes of $596 million, net earnings closed at $928 million.
Abbott’s Q2 2026 results highlight a strategic shift toward expanding its diagnostic capabilities. While the Exact Sciences transaction delivered immediate top-line scale through Cancer Diagnostics, the associated debt burden and intangible amortization created short-term bottom-line pressure. As Abbott works through integration and operational optimization across its core medical device and diagnostic portfolios, managing financial leverage will be central to restoring net profit expansion.
