Examining financial statements each quarter offers an unfiltered look into how enterprise demand and industry trends translate into actual cash and profits. Digging into the income statement of tech giant Broadcom Inc. reveals not only how effectively the business is operating, but also provides a clear window into the rapid scaling of enterprise artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure. Broadcom’s latest Form 10-Q filing highlights an exceptional fiscal third quarter ended August 2, 2026, marked by surging top-line growth and expanding operational leverage.
A closer look at the cost breakdown reveals $1.7 billion in unallocated cost of revenue. This variance between total cost of revenue and division-level direct operating costs primarily reflects the amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets ($1.5 billion)—largely tied to historical acquisitions like VMware—alongside minor restructuring expenses, rather than direct manufacturing outlays.
Net revenue surged 86% year-over-year to $29.6 billion for the quarter, up from $16.0 billion in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. The primary engine of this growth was the Semiconductor Solutions division, which produces custom AI application-specific accelerators (often called XPUs) and high-speed data center networking silicon. Segment revenue skyrocketed 127% to $20.8 billion, accounting for over 70% of total company sales. Operating income for the semiconductor division expanded 145% to $12.8 billion, demonstrating tremendous operating leverage as hyperscale cloud customers scale out their custom AI cluster buildouts.
Broadcom’s inventory balance doubled over the first nine months of the fiscal year to $4.5 billion, specifically geared toward meeting shipment targets for AI racks and silicon systems. Demonstrating even greater long-term confidence—or perhaps securing tight supply chains—the company reported an astonishing $126.8 billion in total purchase commitments, overwhelmingly concentrated in fiscal 2027 ($52.7 billion) and fiscal 2028 ($73.0 billion) for advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity.
Broadcom's second major pillar, Infrastructure Software, incorporates virtualization and enterprise tools from VMware alongside mainframe software from CA Technologies and Symantec cybersecurity. Software net revenue expanded 29% year-over-year to $8.8 billion, delivering $7.3 billion in division operating income—an enviable operating margin of 83.7%. The continued transition of VMware customers toward full-stack Cloud Foundation subscriptions has strengthened recurring annual contract values, stabilizing cash generation alongside the faster-moving hardware cycle.
At the consolidated level, gross profit hit $20.5 billion, representing a 69.1% gross margin. Total operating expenses were well contained at $4.5 billion, leading to an operating income of $16.0 billion—a 171% surge compared to $5.9 billion in the prior-year period. Operating margin expanded dramatically from 37% to 54%.
Net income reached $13.1 billion, or $2.68 per diluted share, up more than threefold from $4.1 billion ($0.85 per diluted share) in Q3 2025. Cash generation was equally robust, with operating cash flow reaching $14.2 billion for the quarter. Broadcom returned $3.1 billion to shareholders via its regular quarterly dividend ($0.65 per share) while retiring $5.6 billion in outstanding debt.
Broadcom occupies a vital strategic position bridging merchant semiconductor suppliers like NVIDIA and custom silicon foundries like TSMC. By pairing bespoke AI compute accelerators and networking silicon with high-margin VMware enterprise software, Broadcom has established defensive cash flows alongside explosive generative AI exposure. Nevertheless, customer concentration among a handful of hyperscale buyers and massive multi-year manufacturing commitments remain key watchpoints as enterprise data center architectures continue to evolve.
